During this roundtable, we will seek to identify best practice models to support the commercialisation of early-stage hydrogen projects in the UK and Ireland. Drawing on UK experience, participants will examine the incentives available to deliver early hydrogen projects and discuss the potential mechanisms to produce, distribute and store hydrogen.

The UK Hydrogen Strategy outlined the role of hydrogen in the UK’s future energy plans and concentrated on four key areas – low-carbon hydrogen production, networks and storage, end-uses, and market development.  The Irish Government’s Hydrogen Strategy, when published, will outline the policy approach to incentivise the production and use of hydrogen in Ireland. In tandem with measures to increase the cost of carbon and deter the consumption of carbon intensive fuels, both governments want to spur demand for low-carbon hydrogen capacity through industrial policy and subsidy, like the policy approach adopted to promote the growth of renewables.

  1. POLICY: Developing support mechanisms to incentivise hydrogen production (60 minutes)
  • Representative from Department of Energy Security & Net Zero (UK)
  • Representative from Department of the Environment, Climate & Communications (Ireland)
  • Representative from Department for the Economy Northern Ireland

To date, UK supports for hydrogen have focused on production. Mechanisms are designed to overcome the operating cost gap between low-carbon hydrogen and high carbon fuels, including the Hydrogen Business Models and the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund to kick-start domestic production. The UK government recently launched a consultation seeking views on moving to price-based competition for the annual electrolytic hydrogen allocation rounds. During this session, policy makers will share insights on the types of hydrogen projects that are expected in the coming years, lessons learned to date and explore some of the parallels and differences (if any) between the envisaged hydrogen economy in the respective jurisdictions.#

2. INDUSTRY VIEW: Observations and lessons learned from participating in competitions for UK government hydrogen support

During this session, recent recipients of UK government support and funding will share their experience and plans for the development and commercialisation of their hydrogen projects.
